The Bible is written in poetry that name-checks real things – grass, flowers, lost lambs. Much of it has passed into our language. Quotes are from the King James Version, unless otherwise specified. The KJV is a faithful translation, and the next best thing to reading the Bible in the original Hebrew or Greek.

fall on deaf ears Ps 58 the wicked “are like the adder that stoppeth her ear; Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.”
 
fat years, lean years Gen 41 tells of Pharaoh’s dream about thin and fat cattle, which Joseph interprets as an omen of fat and lean years.
 
fear and trembling 2 Cor 7 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. Eph 6 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Phil 2 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

fly in the ointment Eccl 10:1-2 “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”
 
forbidden fruit Gen 3:3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

heap coals of fire on the enemy’s head Pro 25:22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. (It’s like rubbing salt into the wound. You can do it by being very nice to your enemy and making him feel guilty, or by being successful and making him jealous.)
 
heart of stone Job 41:24 His heart is ... as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
 
hide your light under a bushel Matt 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
 
hold forth Phil 2:16 Xtns should go through the world “holding forth the word of life.”

Keep to the straight and narrow/on the straight and narrow Matt 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Strait also meaning narrow as in strait-jacket. Shd really be on the strait and narrow, ie on the narrow and narrow.)
 
kick against the pricks Acts 9:5 It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Holy wrong

Some phrases just sound as if they ought to be Biblical.

 

a snare and a delusion Lots of snares in the Bible, no delusions.
 
the last straw breaks the camel’s back The earliest reference is in... Dombey and Son.
 
God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb It's just an olde proverb.

 
pour oil on troubled waters There are lots of troubled waters but no oil. Ps 46:3 [Though] the waters thereof roar [and] be troubled, [though] the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.
 
Let the dead past bury its dead said Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, though maybe he was thinking of: Leave the dead to bury their own dead (Lk 9:60)
